NATIONAL NIGHT OUT. Aug. 1. Various locations around the county.
SUMMER LUNCH IN THE LIBRARY. Through Aug. 18. Meals, prepared and provided by Baltimore County Public Schools and the USDA Summer Food Service Program, are served Monday through Friday for children 18 and under at several libraries, including Randallstown at noon, Reisterstown at noon, and Woodlawn at 12:30 p.m.
COMMUNITY FESTIVAL. Aug. 5, 12:30 to 7 p.m., at Northwest Regional Park, 4515 Deer Park Road in Owings Mills. Food, drinks, live music from the Spindells, Jazzy Blu and Jumpstreet. Also, children’s activities and the county’s mobile job center will be on site. Hosted by Council Chairman Julian Jones. See the flyer.
FREE EYE EXAMS AND EYEGLASSES. Aug. 9 and 14, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Woodlawn Library. Aug. 15, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Randallstown Library. Vision To Learn is providing free eye exams and glasses to children who may not be able to afford otherwise. While appointments can be made for children up to age 17, there are limited options for teen- and adult-sized frames. Registration is in person at the branch location; a signed consent form (available at branches) by a parent or guardian is required.
LAWYERS IN THE LIBRARY. Aug. 9, 4 to 6 p.m., Woodlawn Library. In partnership with legal services providers, the Mobile Library Law Center provides free assistance for civil legal issues, including bankruptcy, child custody and support, debt collection, expungements, foreclosure, government benefits, landlord/tenant, veterans’ benefits and wage claims. Maryland Legal Aid lawyers are on hand to offer free legal advice for eligible individuals on. Bring all relevant documents. Assistance is offered on a first-come, first-served basis to those eligible, as there are income guidelines. MUSIC OF THE BIG BAND ERA. Aug. 11, 6:30 p.m., Woodlawn Library. Celebrate Baltimore County Public Library’s 75th anniversary with an after-hours concert featuring the Sounds Good combo led by Bob Jacobson, formerly with the Baltimore Jazz Alliance. Enjoy swing, jazz and blues from decades past and light refreshments. Doors open at 6 p.m.
GWYNN OAK UNITY FESTIVAL. Commemorate the 60th anniversary of the desegregation of Gwynn Oak Park on Aug. 27, noon, 6010 Gwynn Oak. Ave. in Woodlawn. A mosaic project will be unveiled. Enjoy live music and entertainment, readings and children’s activities.
SNAP OUTREACH. Aug. 10, 5 to 7 p.m., Pikesville Library; Aug. 16, 5 to 7 p.m., Randallstown Library; Aug. 24, 5 to 7 p.m., Owings Mills Library. A benefits eligibility specialist from Community College of Baltimore County provides one-on-one assistance with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) applications and re-determinations.
FREE WALK-UP HEALTH SCREENINGS. Aug. 14, 1 to 5 p.m. and Aug. 24, 1 to 4 p.m. Owings Mills Library. The Baltimore County Department of Health Harm Reduction Program is on site offering free health screenings, including blood pressure and blood glucose, as well as HIV and hepatitis C rapid testing with immediate results in a private space. This is a walk-up service; no registration required.
SCHOOL BOARD. Upcoming meetings of the Baltimore County Board of Education are Aug. 8 and 22, Sept. 12 and 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the board’s Greenwood campus, Building E, Room 114, 6901 N. COUNTY COUNCIL. Upcoming legislative sessions of the County Council will be held in-person and via web conferencing at 6 p.m. on Aug. 7, Sept. 5 and Sept. 18, with work sessions on Aug. 1, Aug. 29 and Sept. 12. POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS COUNCIL. These councils consist of community leaders, interested citizens and representatives of the local business community, which meet to resolve issues of concern and provide an open forum. Many meetings are now held online and/or may be paused during the summer.
