Each year, Marylanders, especially parents and teens preparing for the start of the school year, have the opportunity to save on the sales taxes of certain clothing and shoe purchases the second Sunday of August to the following Saturday.
This year’s Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week will be held on Sunday, Aug. 10, through Saturday, Aug. 16, the State Comptroller’s office has announced. That means qualifying apparel and footwear $100 or less per item are exempt from the state sales tax. Accessory items are not included.
For a list of what’s taxable and what’s exempt, visit the Comptroller’s website at comptroller.marylandtaxes.com.
For those looking to save on appliances, there is a Shop Maryland Energy Tax-Free weekend every February during which the state sales tax will not apply to certain Energy Star products or solar water heaters. The weekend to save in 2015 is Feb. 14 through Feb. 16.
Energy Star product means an air conditioner, clothes washer or dryer, furnace, heat pump, standard size refrigerator, compact fluorescent light bulb, light-emitting diode (LED) light bulbs, dehumidifier, or programmable thermostat that has been designated as meeting or exceeding the applicable Energy Star Efficiency requirements developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.
