The best people to help shape programs for young people are young people themselves, and youth will have the opportunity to do so under a new Baltimore County initiative.

The Department of Economic and Workforce Development is launching the Baltimore County Youth Council, a youth-led initiative designed to help young people develop leadership skills, engage with county leaders and community partners, and help shape the future of their communities.

“Our young people have a lot to offer, and we want to give them a seat at the table,” County Executive Kathy Klausmeier said in an Aug. 13 announcement about the program.

The council will bring together 12 county residents ages 14 to 21 who are interested in leadership, community service and youth advocacy. Council members will share their perspectives on issues affecting young people and identify ways to strengthen communities across the county.

The young people will participate in regular meetings and activities focused on leadership development, community service and youth advocacy. They also will work with county leaders and community partners to identify a community need, develop a solution and implement a community service project.

The initiative is part of the county’s broader effort to expand opportunities for young people to participate in their communities and connect with county programs, services and resources.

Young people from all backgrounds and communities are encouraged to apply. Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation, a creative community service essay and a resume or activity list.

The application period runs from Aug. 14 through Sept. 18.
