The revitalization of Powhatan Park continues. Through a state Greenspace Equity Program grant, a community garden will be created at the 1.5-acre park located at the dead-end of Robin Hill Road in Lochearn.

With $64,890 in grant funding, the nonprofit NeighborSpace of Baltimore County will help install the garden at Powhatan Park, a space it transformed from a vacant lot four years ago into a serene space with new trails, plantings and drainage improvements. The property is steps from Powhatan Elementary School.
The Powhatan Community Garden is one of 15 public greenspace projects approved to receive state grants, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources announced in an Aug. 16 press release.
The grant recipients are located in nine counties and Baltimore City, and the awards range from $62,700 for a community dog park in Denton to $2 million for improvements to the Gwynns Falls Leakin Park Trail, which is used by county and city residents. In that project, trail connections will be established for pedestrians from two major parking lots to the Carrie Murray Nature Center and the Gwynns Falls Trail off Hutton Avenue. Two land acquisitions for new parks also are among the projects to receive funds.
The Greenspace Equity Program was established in 2023 through state legislation to provide grants for projects that enhance the public health and livability of overburdened and underserved communities. About $7 million was included in the state’s 2027 fiscal year budget to support the program.
The grants must receive final approval from the Maryland Board of Public Works.
