Community members looking for more outdoor recreational opportunities will soon have a new option at Northwest Regional Park in Owings Mills.

County Executive Kathy Klausmeier, elected officials, and recreation and parks staff gathered at the park Aug. 19 for a ceremonial groundbreaking for a new 2,700-square-foot splash pad. Construction is underway and is expected to continue through 2027. The facility scheduled to open for the 2028 season.

Located next to the Baltimore Ravens-themed playground, the splash pad will feature sports-themed spray elements that allow children to interact with the water in a variety of ways. The project also includes a comfort station with restrooms, showers, foot-washing stations and drinking fountains, as well as shaded gathering areas.

The $6.4 million project is being funded through state and local funds.

The splash pad will serve as an additional amenity at the park, which includes athletic fields, ball diamonds, walking paths and community gardens.

The county has recently increased its focus on aquatic recreation. After the Y of Central Maryland announced in April that it would not renew its leases to operate swim centers in Randallstown and Dundalk, the county agreed to take over management of the pools. The partnership ends Aug. 31, and the Department of Recreation and Parks will assume operations of the two centers in September with limited hours.
