Baltimore County Police are continuing their investigation of an incident involving a Mass Transit Administration bus where 36 people were injured in incident involving a multiple vehicle crash. An MTA bus traveling southbound in the 1500 block of Reisterstown Road in Pikesville lost control just before 6 p.m. on July 8, striking 12 vehicles and several commercial businesses.
Video captured by surveillance cameras and witnesses show that the scene quickly turned chaotic, after the bus was observed barreling down Reisterstown Road at a high speed before hitting the building and vehicles before coming to a stop. It was determined to be a mass casualty event, with dozens of fire, police and emergency personnel on the scene to aid riders, drivers and pedestrians who were impacted.
The bus driver had to be excavated and appeared to be the most seriously injured. The driver was transported in critical condition by Medevac to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to a Baltimore County Police press release. Thirty-five additional patients were transported to area hospitals as well. Detectives with the Baltimore County Police Crash Team determined that 12 vehicles were involved.
Debris remains at the site of the incident at Reisterstown Road near Old Court roads. The FedEx store is closed with a red danger sign alerting passersby that the building is unsafe for use or occupancy. (It has since opened.) Cones block off part of the sidewalk.
The circumstances leading up to this crash remain under investigation, as it is unclear how the accident happened.
